From the earliest days, people in this region have left their mark. Stone age tombs and ancient mountain forts decorate a landscape adorned with many reminders of our Celtic past. The Vikings left their own legacy too and many round towers and brooding castles remain from the Norman invasion. From a later age, a whole series of elegant stately homes and their world famous gardens can be enjoyed throughout the region and there are many award–winning museums housed in historic buildings.
